How tall are these, and what is the diameter?

7-1/8" tall, x 3-3/16" outside diameter. Nice large size for cold drinks or large hot coffees. Use mine regularly :) .

Is the glass on these thin? would you consider them fragile?

No! I previously bought the double-wall Bodum tumblers, and the thinner glass was more elegant--but too fragile. I found these and I've been delighted with them! The glass is very STRONG & DURABLE--but NOT CLUNK; the rim is the right thinness so I can't tell that I'm drinking from a double-thickness glass. They are awesome in summer HUMIDITY; When other cups are dripping with condensation, this one barely fogs--even when filled with ice! I'm back to buy more since my mom knocked the one I keep at her place off the counter; ONLY THE RIM CRACKED rather than the whole glass shatter (I've continued using it several weeks after it cracked).

Why would one just explode when ice is put in?

Well, my guess would be because they are pressurized GLASS and an ice dropping from an icemaker could POSSIBLY cause that to happen. I use crushed ice in mine for that very reason ... common sense. This has NOT happened to me, it was someone else's review, I guess. I did not read it.
