2018 Safari Ltd. DaeodonAnother prehistoric mammal figure from Safari Ltd’s 2018 lineup, the Daeodon is one I have had on my backlog for a long time now. Having it in hand, I’m so happy that I finally managed to get ahold of this wonderful piece!Daeodon was the largest known member of the Entelodont family. If you have ever seen Walking With Prehistoric Beasts, you will undoubtably remember these monsters! Though they’re commonly called “Hell Pigs”, or “Terminator Pigs”, they’re actually no relation to modern pigs at all, though they do share similar traits.Safari Ltd’s take on this animal is far less monstrous, and far more natural than the animal is normally depicted. Safari has managed to make their Daeodon menacing, powerful, and intimidating, without making it look like a homicidal hell beast.The head sculpt is incredible. Safari has managed to showcase the unusual Entelodontid skull morphology without making the animal appear emaciated. Daeodon means “dreadful teeth”, and those are very much on display here, although I do feel they could have been a bit bigger. The teeth, as well as interior of the mouth, are sculpted beautifully. There is an impressive amount of detail inside that mouth! The impressive fur detail begins in the face as well, and is sculpted with great attention to detail.A beautifully sculpted hackled mane begins at the back of the skull, and continues down the neck, and along the raised vertebrae between the shoulders. The fur flows naturally across the entire body, and is expertly sculpted.The sculptural detail, in general, is phenomenal! There is excellent implied movement through various skin folds and wrinkles. The muscles bulge and ripple through the skin in the appropriate places, and you can see the power this animal had.As with the previously reviewed Uintatherium, this figure is sculpted with anatomical accuracy, and is very visually male. It’s great to see companies take these animals seriously, treating them as they would any modern animal figurine.Paint applications on this one are near perfection. The coloration is very similar to that of a lion. It seems like an odd choice, at first, for a hoofed animal, but fits this particular beast perfectly. The eyes are painted beautifully, and serve to give this figure life. The teeth and mouth are impressively painted as well, featuring a nice gloss that give it a wet look. Everything is applied with such care that it doesn’t even feel like paint. It feels like a real animal, and that should always be the goal with prehistoric life figurines.This is an amazing figure of an intimidating beast. This may be the most impressive prehistoric mammal figure that Safari Ltd. has done so far. I really hope that Safari releases more ancient mammals in the future. Especially if they’re anywhere near the quality of this Daeodon!
