Q: how deep should this be put in ground?

We went from 1 foot to 3 foot. We are using it for a rain tunnel so it quits washing out my hill. It works amazingly.

Q: How does water collection and drainage work if it is perforated all the way around? Please: If you don't know, I'm not asking you.

The presumption is that water is pooling underground, the pressure of which causes it to fill the drain pipe through the sidewall. Once inside, the water can flow toward a low-pressure (and downhill) exit point. Without the drain pipe, but with an exit point (e.g., a hole in a retaining wall), excess water could still flow, but not as quickly.

Q: can I cut this to different lengths

Yes. I stretch it out and cut to the desired length.
