Q: How is it at making a latte, Does the steamer work good.

The steamer does work well - however, it might take a few times to learn the best technique. (It definitely workers better with low fat milk.)

Q: What is the actual clearance in inches between filter and cup tray?

The distance is 3" from drip spouts when inserted for function, but I Used one 3 1/2" cup for Double Shot ( Tip it a fraction when function complete, as you view pic, the drip spouts are 1/3" ) ... This is an Excellent Machine! 0 Problems in 18 mos. since purchase! Hope answer makes since! Great Machine & White is hard to find!

Q: Does this one have automatic protection that turns off machine ?

I don't know about overheat protection. I always turn it off. I have forgotten it once or twice, for an hour or so, and no problem. The water will not deplete by itself. You can see the water tank, and if it runs out, you will definitely hear it when making a coffee. I use distilled water and keep the tank full at all times as I use the machine 4-6 times a day.
