The cover isn't removable. I would recommend sponging, not submerging it in water.

Q: Why does the blue offer a $10 off but the purple only offers a $3 off?

My guess is they were trying to sell more blue than purple.

Q: what is the gel made of? Is it a safer gel like sodium polyacrylate or a dangerous one like diethylene glycol?

I really have no idea didn't look .. I needed a long ice pack ... I will tell you most of the packs are gone I only have the last 2 at the bottom :( very sad about that!!!
