Get the right thread, heavy duty needles and a couple cans of scotch guard! I am by far a seamstress, and have not done too many things with upholstery, but this worked great for the top of our humvee. We used electrical conduit to frame it, and I just have a regular sewing machine. There were a few places where we had to drill holes right through it and it kept its shape and didn't fray. I sewed 6 layers without a problem, but 7 is where it started jamming up. This material is great, and very heavy duty. It has been outside for a few months and is very dirty, but it has not faded in our Vegas desert sun yet. Despite the loose spots, it doesn't flap in the wind too much, but we don't go over 50 in this beast. It is different on the top and the bottom, so make sure that is ok for your projects. Worked great for mine!Compared to duck cloth.. .I did a similar project on a Ramcharger 10 years ago using Duck Cloth. It was much stronger/thicker, but Jamed up my machine more, and faded in out Vegas sun. The duck cloth was the same on both sides. We did scotch guard that once, 10 years ago. The Ottertex is way thinner and easier to work with in the sewing machine.

Great service
I normally do not rate products I buy, however, Canvas is exceptional. This is my second review. My first one described the great quality of the canvas. Now, I'd like to tell everyone about their service. I ordered another 5 yards, but I have a deadline for delivery. I contacted the seller and they delivered it quickly, no extra fees. I'm one satisfied customer.

Canvas, coated on one side with a rubbery substance. Durable. Mildly difficult to sew.
Fabric is a canvas material that’s had a coating applied to one side. It’s pretty stiff when delivered. Has a bit of weight and doesn’t stretch or tear easily. Cut just fine with my fabric scissors. My little sewing machine could only handle three layers (using canvas needles, swapping out as they dulled, 1.5 per project), had to hand stitch anything stacked thicker and use a stronger needle made for stitching sails. Waterproofing is decent on the canvas side and great on the other, just realize if you put holes in it water will pass through, like stitching pockets or seams. I made three projects with my 5 yards. A ground pad for camping (made a pocket, canvas side out and can slip in different pads as needed), a drop blanket for hunting/shooting and a hood. I Took the ground pad camping and canoeing on the South Edisto River in SC. It fell in the river once and floated till I caught it. All the water shed right off with a shake. Had rain encroach on the tent and underside was wet all night but I stayed dry on top, no seepage. Had to let the canvas side that was in constant contact with water air dry, but two hours of overcast and it was dry. Used the hammock another night in the swamps and even with fog stayed dry even though hammock had absorbed a lot of moisture. (Used the pad as a moisture/thermal barrier, hammock is just thin ripstop nylon.). Plus the canvas provided enough grip that I wasn’t constantly sliding into a ball all night. The drop cloth works great on damp ground, canvas absorbs light oils and keeps me comfortable while prone shooting or sitting on ground for extended periods. The coated side is what contacts the ground. Wipes dry, and hangs till next use. The material still too stiff to properly use for a hood. Doesn’t really gather properly when down, and doesn’t breathe, so not great. Kept the rain and wind off my head, but ended up sweating and still being wet.

Perfect for my specific purpose!
I bought this fabric to use as a protective covering over the upholstery in our new camper van. No sewing was required as I simply bought enough material to generously cover the sofa, bed/seating areas to protect them from wear and dirt from our 2 dogs (who travel with us), by tucking the edges of the material into the tight spaces where cushions meet the sides of the van. I also used pieces on the seat portions of the front seats, to protect against wear and food or drink spills. It was much less costly than commercial or custom-made seat covers, and it has worked perfectly. The material Is certainly heavy and durable enough to hold up to any dog wear, while remaining in place quite well due to it's weight. And it's been simple to lift them off each day to shake outside each day to rid them of any dirt, dog hair or debris, or easily fold up to store out of the way when not needed. It has worked very well, and extremely economically.

Nice fabric but faded badly fast
The description is accurate, this is a canvas with a PU waterproof backing. It is waterproof but if it gets wet you’ll want to shake the water off so it can’t mildew the canvas. It was not too difficult to see with upholstery thread and a heavy-duty needle. I bought 10 yards 4/25/19 to recover cushions and make some pillows. I chose turquoise because I thought the Texas sun would fade it in a few years and the soft blue would be okay. However, I completed the cushions the second week of May and already the fabric is fading. You can see where I’ve flipped the seat cushion around and the darker place in front where the throw pillows sat and shaded it, and the darker blue in the other photo is the backside of a pillow, the lighter top of another next to it. You can see the significant difference in color fading in just SIX WEEKS, and many days of those weeks were overcast and rainy. Never mind fading to lighter, softer blue in a few years, I’m not sure that by the end of this first summer the cushions won’t be almost white. It’s a shame to have wasted all that effort on something that won’t last.If you plan to use this fabric indoors or in a sheltered place, it will probably serve you better than trying to use it as a true outdoor fabric.I added stars for fabric meeting description and price, subtracted stars for speed of fading.
